Abdominal Ultrasound in Canberra
An abdominal ultrasound looks at the organs in your upper abdomen — including the liver, gallbladder, bile ducts, pancreas, spleen and kidneys. It's a safe, painless way for your doctor to investigate abdominal pain, monitor known conditions, or follow up on other test results.
Preparation: Please don't eat or drink anything — including water, chewing gum or cigarettes — for at least 6 hours before your scan. Essential medications can be taken with a small sip of water, but avoid antacids and anti-reflux medication while fasting. If you have diabetes, bring something to eat for straight after your appointment.
What to expect: Warm gel is applied and a probe is moved across your upper abdomen. You may be asked to take a deep breath and hold it, or change position, to help us get clear images. The scan is painless and usually takes 20–30 minutes.
Billing: We are a mixed-billing practice. You'll be told the total cost, your Medicare rebate and any out-of-pocket expense before the scan.
