Renal (Kidney) Ultrasound in Canberra
A renal ultrasound examines the kidneys and bladder, and is used to investigate urinary symptoms, monitor kidney health, or follow up on findings from other tests. It's a safe, radiation-free way to assess the size, shape and structure of the kidneys and the bladder.
Preparation: A comfortably full bladder gives the clearest view of the kidneys and bladder. Two hours before your appointment, empty your bladder completely, then drink 600 mL of water over the following hour and avoid going to the toilet again until your scan is finished.
What to expect: Warm gel is applied and a probe is moved over your back and abdomen. You may be asked to breathe in and hold, or roll onto your side, to bring the kidneys into view. The scan is painless and usually takes around 20 minutes.
