Musculoskeletal Ultrasound in Canberra
Musculoskeletal (MSK) ultrasound uses high-frequency sound waves to look at muscles, tendons, ligaments and joints in real time. Because the image is live, your sonographer can move the joint while scanning to assess how the structures behave — something a static image can't show.
It's commonly used to investigate shoulder pain (including rotator cuff and supraspinatus tendons), elbow, wrist and hand problems, hip and knee complaints, ankle and foot pain, and soft-tissue injuries to muscles, tendons and ligaments. It can also assess abdominal and groin hernias.
Preparation: No preparation is required. Eat, drink and take your medications as normal. Please wear loose, comfortable clothing so the area being examined is easy to access.
What to expect: A warm gel is applied to the skin and a small handheld probe is moved over the area. You may be asked to move the joint or hold certain positions so we can see the structures working. The scan is generally painless, though there may be mild pressure over a tender spot. Most MSK scans take 20–30 minutes.
Billing: Woden Ultrasound is a mixed-billing practice. You'll be told the total cost, your Medicare rebate and any out-of-pocket expense before your scan. We accept all referrals.
