Venous (DVT) Doppler Ultrasound in Canberra
A venous Doppler ultrasound examines the veins of the legs or arms and the blood flow through them. It's most commonly used to assess for deep vein thrombosis (DVT) — a clot in a deep vein — as well as to investigate swelling, pain or other venous symptoms.
Preparation: No preparation is required. Eat, drink and take medications as normal, and wear loose, comfortable clothing that allows easy access to the limb being examined.
What to expect: Warm gel is applied and a probe is moved along the limb, with gentle pressure used at points to assess the veins. You may hear the sound of blood flow during the scan, which is normal. A venous study is thorough and usually takes 30–45 minutes.
