Aortic & Arterial Doppler Ultrasound in Canberra
Arterial Doppler ultrasound assesses the arteries and the blood flowing through them. We perform a full range of arterial studies, each tailored to the vessel your doctor wants assessed:
Abdominal aortic (AAA) Doppler — assesses the abdominal aorta, including monitoring for an abdominal aortic aneurysm.
Mesenteric artery Doppler — assesses the arteries supplying the bowel.
Iliac artery Doppler — assesses the iliac arteries in the pelvis.
Renal artery Doppler — assesses blood flow to the kidneys.
Temporal artery Doppler — assesses the arteries at the temples.
Upper and lower limb arterial Doppler — assesses the arteries of the arms and legs.
Preparation: The abdominal studies — aortic, mesenteric, iliac and renal artery Doppler — require a 6-hour fast (no food or drink) so the vessels can be seen clearly without bowel gas in the way. Take any essential medication with a small sip of water. The temporal and limb arterial studies need no preparation. If you're unsure which applies to your referral, our reception team will confirm when you book.
What to expect: Warm gel is applied and a probe is moved over the area, with the Doppler measuring blood flow as it goes. You may hear the sound of flowing blood, which is normal. These studies are detailed and typically take 30–45 minutes.
Billing: We are a mixed-billing practice and will explain all costs, your Medicare rebate and any out-of-pocket expense before the scan.
