Dating Scan in Canberra
An 8–10 week dating scan confirms an early pregnancy, helps establish how many weeks along you are, and checks the location of the pregnancy. It's an important early milestone, and we aim to make the visit calm and reassuring.
A transvaginal (internal) scan may be offered and, with your consent, can give a clearer and more accurate view of the uterus, ovaries and an early pregnancy than an abdominal scan alone.
If you are experiencing pain or bleeding, please contact your GP, the Emergency Department, or the Early Pregnancy Unit at Canberra Hospital before your appointment.
Preparation: For an early pregnancy scan we ask you to arrive with a comfortably full bladder. Empty your bladder two hours before your appointment, then drink 600 mL of water over the following hour and try not to go to the toilet again until after your scan.
What to expect: Your sonographer will explain everything before starting and ask for your consent. Warm gel is applied and a probe is moved gently over your lower abdomen; if a transvaginal scan is appropriate, it will be discussed with you first. Most appointments take 20–30 minutes.
Billing: We are a mixed-billing practice and will explain the total cost, your Medicare rebate and any out-of-pocket expense before the scan.
